While there is still a brutal war ongoing in Europe, its consequences are also felt thousands of kilometers away.

 

As Russia and the Ukraine are two of the most important exporters of grain, the prices of wheat, corn and other cereals reached record highs, endangering food security in the Global South. While the war in Ukraine catalyzed the current food price crisis, investigations show that the problems lie deeper and can be traced back to instabilities in the global food system. On top of that, financial investors capitalize on the situation and push prices even higher.
