BackThe Austrian Chamber of Labour (AK) as part of the Treaty Alliance Austria welcomes the announcement of EU Commissioner Didier Reynders to present a draft for binding due diligence obligations at EU level for 2021. These could make a significant contribution to preventing human rights violations and environmental destruction along supply chains. Particularly against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated crisis, it becomes clear how urgently measures are needed to ensure that companies take their human rights responsibilities seriously.
An open letter with AK as one of the co-signatories shows which requirements such a law must fulfil. In addition, binding rules for companies are needed not only at the EU level, but worldwide. Since 2015, annual negotiations on a legally binding UN convention, the so-called UN Treaty, have been ongoing within the UN framework. The Treaty Alliance Austria calls on the EU to finally enter these important negotiations. Binding rules are a necessary instrument both to overcome the current crisis and to prevent systematic human rights violations and the destruction of the environment along the supply chain.
