BackIn November, the members of the European Parliament voted by a narrow majority in favour of amending the EU Treaties. This involves important organisational principles of the EU. Among other, Parliament is calling for more rights of co-determination and decision-making and a social progress protocol. The ball is now in the European Council's court to decide whether to convene a convention.

BackLast week, the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) presented its manifesto for the 2024 European election in the EU Parliament. There was a great deal of interest and approval. The aim of the manifesto is to develop a vision for the next five years in Europe. It is an invitation to the parties and candidates to endorse 12 commitments: A fair deal for workers should make Europe more social and fairer.

BackThe theme of this year's EU Tax Symposium in October 2023 was "The future of taxation in the EU". Politicians and academics discussed the taxation of corporations, assets and possible new EU own resources. It became clear that tax policy must also provide answers to the current crises and future challenges.

BackIn the course of the mid-term review of the Multiannual Financial Framework, the EU Commission is proposing an increase in funds. This is necessary to ensure that the budget can fulfil its most important tasks in view of the numerous crises. The focus is also on investments in key technologies. In contrast, no increase in funds is planned for important social programmes. AK demands a significantly stronger focus on social policy goals.

BackOn Wednesday, 13 September 2023, Commission President von der Leyen delivered the annual State of the Union (SOTEU) address at the EU Parliament in Strasbourg. The last SOTEU in this legislative period before the upcoming EU elections in June 2024 focused on green transition, artificial intelligence (AI) and enlargement. The social perspective was addressed with individual important points, for example with regard to the role of the social partners. However, overall it fell too short.
